Institute Retreat | Reimagining Justice: (Kintsugi) Peace Making with Haejin Shim Fujimura

December 6 @ 7:00 pm - December 8 @ 2:00 pm

Plate mended by Kintsugi

Join us for a unique retreat experience led by Haejin Shim Fujimura, where she will guide us in reimagining justice—not as a force that breaks or divides, but as a process that carefully mends and strengthens the broken places in our communities and lives. Through deep reflection, thoughtful discussion, and practical workshops, participants will explore how the fractures in our society can become sites of profound peace and renewal.

Micah 6:8 calls us to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.” In this retreat, we will reflect on how “doing justice” is a calling to steward the broken places in our communities with care and intention, much like the careful mending characteristic of Kintsugi.
This retreat is designed for those who long to see justice done with grace and empathy, who believe that even in the midst of pain and brokenness, there is the possibility for something beautiful to emerge. Together, we will learn how to hold space for both the wounds of the world and the golden threads of hope that can bind us together.

Come and discover how the principles of Kintsugi can reshape and reinvigorate our approach to justice. Space is limited for this retreat; secure your spot today and become part of a community dedicated to peace making.

About your Guide:

Haejin Shim Fujimura, a dean of the Goldenwood Institute, is a visionary lawyer, non-profit leader, and the President of Academy Kintsugi, where she champions the concept of “Kintsugi-Peace Making.” Coined by Haejin, this term draws from the ancient Japanese art form of Kintsugi, which involves mending broken pottery with gold to create a vessel more beautiful and valuable than it was before. Haejin’s approach to Kintsugi extends beyond art, applying its principles to the healing of relationships, communities, and even historical conflicts.

With a deep commitment to justice and beauty, Haejin sees every fracture—whether in a teacup, a relationship, or a society—as an opportunity to create something new. Her work is inspired by the belief that Kintsugi-Peace is the transformation of brokenness into something true, good, and beautiful through the courageous efforts of a generative community of makers.

Haejin’s vision for generational Kintsugi-Peace Making is about more than just repair; it’s about the creation of a New Creation that acknowledges past fractures while boldly reimagining a future filled with grace and resilience. Through her leadership, Haejin inspires others to engage in the difficult but necessary work of mending and making anew, bringing forth beauty and justice from the chaos and conflict that often define our world.
